What Inspired You To Create The Saga Society?

The inspiration to start this community came from Rod Dreher’s profound book called The Benedict Option. Dreher writes:

“Here’s how to get started with the antipolitical politics of the Benedict Option. Secede culturally from the mainstream. Turn off the television. Put the smartphones away. Read books. Play games.”

from “The Benedict Option: A Strategy for Christians in a Post-Christian Nation”, by Rod Dreher

The goal of the Saga Society is to establish a community that supports the core values of Traditional Christianity by embracing tabletop hobbies played within a moral, traditional Christian environment.

Do I Have To Play ‘Lawful Good’ Characters In Roleplaying Games?

No, absolutely not. If you’re playing Adventures in Middle-earth, you can be a character like Boromir, tempted by the Shadow. Like Lord of the Rings though, many games have mechanics which emulate the descent into darkness. In Adventures in Middle-earth, a Boromir character, if they fall into Shadow and continue to do evil, eventually fall into madness and become non-player characters.

But this isn’t the only type of game we support. You can play morally-neutral games like Traveller or Savage Worlds if you prefer. You can play flawed characters if you wish. Such matters are up to your local game groups. But when you run or play such games, think about ways you can play them and be respectful of traditional Christian values.
